Turtleneck Season - 4 ways to wear and style a Turtleneck

Hi There Stylish Friends,

Turtlenecks.. I was never really into them until the last couple of years. Trying to style them while keeping your outfit simple has some work to it. I recently had some photoshoots with turtlenecks so make sure to check those out on my Instagram. Tokyo does not get that cold so I usually just stick to thinner types. Hope this article helps with deciding how to style these easy but stylish pieces of clothing.

1. One Color

Black is must for most items. It is the easiest color to match and always works out well. When going for one color, make sure your jeans are a slim fit. not too tight, and definitely not loose/baggy. I personally don’t like the baggy fit on pants and certainly not with turtlenecks. as for the shoes, make sure you get a nice pair of boots or sneakers in the same color. I generally like to avoid patterns but like it have just the right amount in there to make my outfits look interesting enough.I also use grey quite often, so mixed it up with this fit below.

2. Casual Jackets

When layering it up, make sure you get a cool jacket. again the fit is important so make sure that is ok. Leather jackets are excellent because they are so versatile. I used my black leather jacket in combination with my white turtleneck and it looks chic but fun.

3. The Suit Combo

My personal Favorite. Especially black and grey turtlenecks look great with suits. I got this suit from the Japanese brand Nano Universe and it really looks cool with a turtleneck. You can pull this off in any situation, whether at work or meeting a friend in a café.

A bit off topic but you don’t expect it, but there are tons of cafes in Tokyo with unique designs and home brewed drinks. If you are a café person this city is definitely a must on your bucket list.

4. Colors

When going for more colorful variations, make sure you don’t overdo it. it’s like when you go for dress shirts in the office. if you wear a neon blue its horrible, but if its a soft/pastel blue, it works out great.

Here’s a great example for a mock turtleneck. A mock turtleneck is one that only goes up about half the size of your neck. A good alternative for those who find regular ones too suffocating.

I guess you could say that the most important thing for wearing turtlenecks, or anything for that matter, is to not overdo things. Don’t use to many crazy colors, don’t mix too many patterns, and most of all: Wear what is you, not the trend.
