Tokyo Cocktails: Off The Path Top Bars

Cocktails are the perfect blend of science and art.
— Ryan Chetiyawardana

Hi there Stylish Friends,

Tokyo seems to have an infinite amount of great cocktail bars and I am hooked on finding more and more. I noticed people are very secretive about their favorite bars and I partially understand this attitude. I was at The Bellwood the other day and it felt like I was at a tourist attraction. No Japanese guests and no foreign residents other than myself and my friends. It was a weird feeling and I was annoyed at first but then I thought: “Does it really matter?”

I found that as long as I can speak with the bartenders (I usually go for counter seats) and get great cocktails, it doesn’t matter what happens around me!

I found many more bars after posting about the Best Cocktail Bars and want to share some that are a bit less common. Cocktail bars aren’t just about the cocktails, they’re about the whole experience, so I will tell a bit about that too.

Bar Composition

Unveiling Shinjuku's hidden gem, Bar Composition, where sherry-based cocktails are the main dish amidst a captivating ambiance and friendly service. Located in Tokyo's vibrant district, Shinjuku, this bar has an array of well-crafted sherry-infused creations, showcasing the art of mixology. The interior is cozy, setting the stage for an intimate and laid-back evening. Whether you're a sherry enthusiast or seeking a unique drinking experience, this haven in Shinjuku promises a good night out. Sherry isn’t a very popular alcoholic drink so it’s an excellent opportunity to learn more about its flavors and history.

Fauvism Cocktail & Spirits Bar

Right next to Nakameguro station, this bar is all about the vibe. The moon-themed background makes it unique yet stylish. When I visited this place it wasn’t that crowded, making it a great place to have a proper conversation. Many bars play loud music, but that was not the case here. great seats and friendly staff. the cocktails were simple but tasty. I’d say this is more of a date spot than a place for trying out unique and complicated cocktails.

A10

Chasing that speakeasy image, A10 is hidden behind a green and white locker in the middle of Ebisu. Music is the theme of the place, so expect beats to be played by a local DJ. The way they designed the record wall is great and makes the whole bar’s mood. plenty of room for groups to meet too, which is rare in Tokyo. just make sure you reserve because the bar is not as hidden as it would like to be!

DBL

Hiro is a neighborhood known for being posh. This usually leads to less of a community feel. DBL is in the main street near Hiro station and gives exactly the opposite vibe. I never felt such a strong community since I got to Japan. I speak Japanese, which makes a difference, but the bartenders, as well as the customers, welcomed us with open arms and were very chatty. the cocktails were expertly made and the modern design of the bar made you feel at ease real soon. The location is less than 5 minutes from the station and the drinks are priced similar to other bars we have been. Hiro can make you feel at home, so give it a shot.

Code name MIXOLOGY

Mixology, a famous brand from Singapore, has settled itself on the main street of Akasaka. Code name MIXOLOGY is a great place for a classy night out, whether that be on a date, with a friend, or as an overseas visitor. the bar is famous for its unique cocktails and has excellent whiskeys to live up to this reputation. make sure to reserve because the place fills up quickly, even though it is so hidden.

Memento Mori

this cacao-themed is the innovation you’d expect from Tokyo bars. The location is a bit unusual as it is located in the Toranomon Hills Business Tower, but the atmosphere is as great as the most hidden bars you can find. Go for one of their chocolate-based cocktails, they really do their magic with chocolate. oh and, definitely get one of their sweets because the chocolate is top tier, and the bartender having worked at Pierre Hermé shows in the craft that goes in their food.
